Teachers of the other kind

Teachers of the other kind

Today most people across India not only welcomed the Lord of Wisdom Ganesha into their households but also expressed gratitude towards those who helped them gain wisdom. It is a dual celebration of sorts in India with the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi and the National Teachers’ Day falling on the same day this Monday. The festivities and the slew of dedications across social media reminded us of two of our projects that may not be far from conventional teachers but are doing no less a service.

The first one is floated by Abha Khetarpal, a renowned crusader for rights of the disabled, by means of her organization Crossing the Hurdles. Their aim is to create an infrastructure to educate the disabled people through internet and e-tutoring. Very often these people are left behind in education due to the inability to attend traditional schools.

Their online teaching programme would go beyond the textbooks and also deal with subjects that are more essential for the disabled including self advocacy skills and career advice based on their strengths. To know more about their programme and contribute to their campaign follow this link.

The second campaign has been floated by former banker Sanjay Nagar who runs an NGO called Kohka Foundation that works for the upliftment of tribals in villages surrounding the Pench Forest in Madhya Pradesh. His aim is to create computer literacy among the students from these area. He believes that this skill would help the local youth and community to connect with the outside world as well as generate more job opportunities for them.

Having already bought the computers required for the planned computer laboratory at Turria’s Government School, they need the funds for other necessities like a printer, projector, computer accessories and some furniture. You can learn more about the campaign and contribute to it here.
