Internet community’s kindness swamps Bangladeshi cleaner in Saudi Arabia!

A couple of weeks ago, internet was abuzz with the picture of a cleaner in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The poor man was looking through the display window of a jewelry shop. The picture was captioned ‘This man deserves to only look at rubbish.’ on Instagram.

While some people chose to mock the man in the picture, others felt bad. They were not happy that the municipal worker became a joke. These members leveraged the power of social media to track down the man, and showered him with gifts.

It all started with Abdullah Al-Qahtani set on a quest to find the identity of the man in the picture. Incidentally, his twitter account is ‘Ensaneyat’ which is the Arabic word for humanity. 6,500 retweets and a thorough analysis later, Twitterati found out that the man in question was a Bangladeshi immigrant named Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim.

This picture of Nazer looking at the display window of a jewelry shop had gone viral

The 65-year-old municipal worker earns 700 Riyals ($187) a month didn’t even know his picture was on the internet. “I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop,” he told CNN in an interview. He said he saw a flash but didn’t know what it was.

The internet community wanted to make amends for the mean comments of their fellow netizens. Therefore, they decided to start sending help and gifts of all kind for Nazer. Along with money, the gifts sent for him include watches, return tickets to his home country Bangladesh, bags of rice and honey and even two smartphones.

The generosity of strangers on the internet has overwhelmed Nazer. He also expressed the wish that they keep helping those in need all over the world.
