All over the internet, you would find articles about people doubting the legitimacy of such fundraisers. And, who can blame them? It is not so uncommon for people to run elaborate scams and deceive others. Every platform would take some caution to ensure the campaigns on them are genuine. Even then, every once in a while every platform would have questionable fundraisers. Therefore, the donors need to practice due caution themselves while donating to a personal needs crowdfunding campaign. Here, we have a few things you can do to ensure that the campaign you are contributing to is not a scam.
FIGURE OUT DEGREES OF SEPARATION:
There will be some link between you and the fundraiser, if the word about the campaign has reached you. Personal needs crowdfunding campaigns in their initial stages are usually shared by people close to the fundraiser. It is easier to infer this link on social media. When you find out a common acquaintance, ask them about the person in question. Have a discussion about their situation before you decide to contribute.
TRACK THEM ON SOCIAL MEDIA:
If you found out about the campaign through media, on some blog or forum, you may not find any person to link you to them. Most platforms will prompt fundraisers to include links to their social media pages on the campaign page. Even if it is not there, its easy to search them on the common platforms like Facebook and Twitter. In case their name is very common, search by the keywords of their campaign, or better still the URL. In case nothing else works and you are suspicious, don’t hesitate to share your doubts with the platform. They may even agree to share the email address or other details of the fundraiser.
HAVE A CONVERSATION:
What do you do once you get in touch with the person in question? Talk to them about their situation. Discuss what they would do after they get out of that sticky patch. In most cases, it is easy to identify the worthy causes on the basis of such conversations.
KEEP IN TOUCH:
Don’t stop at donating. Try to keep in touch with your donee and ask for updates even after the campaign ends. It would a satisfying experience to see how a small act of kindness can change someone’s life for the better. In case, there is something fishy about the updates, you can always contact the platform and the other donors.
One thing to remember is that no platform would like to back fraud causes or be home to scammers. We also depend on our users and donors for some amount of curation.
