This Monday, music star Shakira received a special honor from a very unexpected quarters. World Economic Forum bestowed upon her the Crystal Award in recognition of her charitable works. In case you don’t know already this singer-songwriter runs a nonprofit that provides education to at-risk kids in her native Columbia, Haiti and South Africa.
She started Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) Foundation in 1997 when she was only 18. Two decades later, the organization has benefited more than 70,000 people including children, youngsters and adults from vulnerable communities. A decade after the first nonprofit, Shakira also started ALAS in Panama. This organization focuses on early childhood and pregnancy intervention with regards to health.
It comes as no surprise, then, that she also serves as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for early childhood development. She was also a member of President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
And, the WEF is not the only organization to recognize Shakita for her charitable acts. UN’s International Labour Organization has bestowed a medal of honor on her for being a “true ambassador for children and young people, for quality education and social justice.”
MTV also gave her the Free Your Mind award for her dedication to ensure education for all children across the world. She was even declared as the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year in 2011 for her philanthropy. Both organizations recognized Shakira’s contribution to music. However, by their own admission, her charity work was a major influence on youngsters.
