Demi Lovato: An Activist Who Really Does Care
Later this month, singer-songwriter-actress Demi Lovato will receive a special award. This honor doesn’t come her way for music or movies but for her advocacy about mental health issues. She will receive the Artistic Award of Courage for heroically speaking out about mental health in order to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and help others.
This would not be the first time that Demi is honored for her social activism either. On National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day 2013, she got applauded for her dedication towards mental health challenges of teens and young adults was applauded. Her involvement and support for marriage equality earned her the position of Grand Marshal for LA Pride in 2014. Last year, Lovato even won the GLAAD Vanguard Award for it.
Demi also supports several charities financially. She has performed in many stage shows whose proceeds went to charity. Organizations she supports include A Day Made Better, City of Hope, Red Cross, Stomp Out Bullying among many. The causes she stands for include HIV-AIDS, education, human trafficking and prevention of sexual abuse. In 2013, she launched Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program to pay treatment costs for mentally-ill patients.
To mark her twenty first birthday, Demi spent the entire day working with charities for kids in Kenya. Among the many tasks, she helped build a free school for the children. Talking about it she said, “On my milestone birthday, I wanted a memorable and meaningful way to celebrate, rather than throw a big birthday bash.”
