Kindness Curriculum found to improve kids’ academic performance

to integrateIn a previous post, we spoke about how scientists proved kindness can be taught to kids. Today, we tell you another scientific “experiment” on the topic. This one refers to the introduction of a kindness curriculum in a school. The kids exposed to it got some unexpected benefits out of it. These included improved academic performance and also other indicators of future success.

Educational researchers at  Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at University of Wisconsin-Madison specially designed the lessons of the curriculum. They made sure to integrate the lessons regarding caring and mindfulness with the traditional curriculum. The “participants” were kids between the ages four to six, and their teachers.

Lessons in this special kindness curriculum were fun and thoughtful in equal measures. While on one hand the kids would reflect on the kind people around them, on the other they would play games. After each of these lessons, researchers measured their impact in several areas.

The “tests” of this curriculum was as special as the course itself. These included sharing their things with their classmates when put in specific situations, and even agreeing to complete others’ tasks. And, most of the students passed with flying colors on all the tests.

The students who took the kindness curriculum scored much better on other academic tests. They also showed better development of skills like self-restraint, discipline and kindness. These kids showed less selfish behavior than other kids of their age. All this led the researchers to conclude that when integrated with regular curriculum, lessons in mindfulness and kindness were more effective.
