Lady Gaga’s legacy as a charitable celebrity

Lady Gaga

She is known for her outlandish, even shocking, appearances other than her main talent of being a singer-songwriter. However, one aspect in the legacy of Lady Gaga that is often missed out is her charitable work. She often uses her creative instincts to shock the world into talking about important issues.

From working towards relief efforts during disasters, contributing to charities to forming her own nonprofit, she has done it all. Her disaster relief efforts have gone towards Haiti earthquake, tsunami in Japan in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy. She even designed Japan Prayer bracelets. Proceeds from the sales of these bracelets went to the tsunami relief efforts, too.

More importantly, she makes constant efforts to inspire her young fans to do good. In fact, the motto of her nonprofit “Born This Way” is ‘To foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated’.

The causes that Gaga supports include anti-bullying, anti-fracking, HIV/AIDS rehabilitation and LGBT rights. She has donated to organizations like The National Alliance to End Homelessness, Green Chimneys, Oxifam, MusiCares and Alzheimer’s Association. Lady Gaga has an outspoken supporter of women empowerment as well.

With fellow singer Cyndi Lauper and MAC Cosmetics, she launched the Viva Glam campaign. The sales of the lipsticks in this line went towards the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In 2012, she was one of the recipients of the LennonOno Grant for Peace. Last year, Gaga was a part of the 84th Annual US Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis. In the event, she spoke alongside Dalai Lama about the power of kindness in making the world a better place.

No wonder than that she considers speaking at the National Equality March in 2009 in support of LGBT movement as “the single most important moment” of her career.
