You may know her as a pop music sensation, a fashion icon and an exotic beauty. She has also received many awards and accolades in all these roles. And, next week will see pop sensation Rihanna add another one to her repertoire. This time, its not for music, acting or looking beautiful but for being a kind and considerate human being.
The Barbadian singer was announced as the 2017 Harvard University Humanitarian of the Year earlier this week. With this, she will join the ranks of Malala Yousafzai, Kofi Annan, Lionel Richie and James Earl Jones, the previous recipients of the award. The announcement surprised a lot of people as RiRi does not discuss her charitable work much.
Harvard Foundation’s director Allen Counter said that Rihanna “charitably built a state-of-the-art centre for oncology and nuclear medicine” in Barbados. He was referring to the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, named after her grandparents.
He added, “She has also created the Clara and Lionel Foundation Scholarship Programme for students from Caribbean countries attending college in USA. Rihanna is a supporter of the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project. It is a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries.”
RiRi set up an NGO called Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children. She has worked towards awareness about HIV and AIDS on a global level. Several times, she has organized charity concerts to support causes like providing health and education to the needy. Other than raising millions for charity, she has personally donated close to $2M of her own earnings.
Despite doing all this amazing work, she never speaks about her activism. This just goes on to show that RiRi thinks of these charitable endeavours a private affair. It also proves her commitment to the causes she espouses.
